Atiku’s exit, not good for APC, says Okorocha

Gov. Rochas Okorocha

Peter Dada, Akure

The Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, has said that the exit of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar from the ruling All Progressives Congress was not a good development for the party.

Atiku who was a former Vice-President recently defected from the ruling party to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Okorocha, who spoke with journalists after receiving an honorary doctorate degree at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State on Saturday, however, described Abubakar as a heavyweight politician.

He said, “I have taken a holistic view of our party, it (Atiku’s exit) is not the best because no matter how anybody thinks, Atiku carries some political weight. His leaving our party is not the best.”

The Imo State Governor, however, noted that since Atiku had decided to move on politically by going to another political party, the APC would make amend and his (Atiku) place will be filled up accordingly.

Reacting to the recent statement credited to the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, which said there would be no automatic ticket for President Muhammadu Buhari ahead the 2019 Presidential Election, against the position of the APC governors, Okorocha maintained that he would support Buhari for a second term.

The chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum had earlier said all the governors would support the party’s sole candidacy of President Buhari in 2019 election but Tinubu disagreed insisting that the APC’s presidential candidate must emerge through a primary.

Okorocha said, “The (Tinubu’s) statement came to me as a surprise, come to think of it, I never referred to him. I refer to the governors of Nigeria including the PDP governors and I said only one or two of them have not joined yet.

“Since I made the statement, no governor has said something contrary to what I said. I am surprised that Asiwaju will now be speaking for the governors. He looks like somebody crying more than the bereaved. I did not see reason for the statement actually. But he commands my respect and I don’t want to join issue with the National Leader of my party.

“What I mentioned was for the governors and secondly what I said is support. The word I use is support that does not mean there will not be primary. Governors can only contribute only 37 votes, we still have over 5,000 votes up there. What I was talking about was governors. I was not talking about other party members. Governors alone do not determine the flagbearer of a party.

“If you recall, I said but for Buhari, I would have run for presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But I found in him a man credible and he still has four years term to do. I will allow him to complete and I will go back to my political trenches because I would still run for presidency anyhow. I consider myself young enough to wait until 2023 and I don’t hide my stand on any issue. But for now, my support goes to President Muhammadu Buhari.”

POLITICS: You have failed Nigerians woefully - Labour Party's Abdulsalam tells APC

- Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, who is the chairman of the Labour Party (LP), declares that the APC has failed Nigerians

- Abdulsalam complained about the high level of poverty across the country

- He says the APC has refused to actually fuse into one political party as its union is constantly threatened

The national chairman of Labour Party (LP), Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, has described the All Progressives Congress and its administration headed by Muhammadu Buhari as a failure.

Abdulsalam said the party had failed woefully since Buhari emerged as the country’s president.

The Punch reports that while speaking at a press conference in Abeokuta, Ogun state, Abdulsalam further accused Buhari of what he described as sectional appointment and development.

Noting that there was a terrible hunger everywhere in Nigeria, Abdulsalam also condemned the APC government over the recently constituted committee on new minimum wage arguing that salary increment cannot be feasible when many governors have not been able to pay salaries for months.

“APC has failed woefully. Let me tell you why APC failed. Buhari belongs to APC.

“Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and his group belong to the Action Congress of Nigeria. Rochas Okorocha belongs to All Progressives Grand Alliance. Dr Ogbonaya Onu belongs to All Nigeria Peoples Party.

“So, you will discover that five political parties are operating independently. The other parties have been subjected to nothing.

“Only Congress for Progressive Change has been benefiting in sectional appointment and development, so to say.

“You can see now that Buhari is trying to mend fences with Tinubu. So, If I am to rate APC performance in Nigeria they won’t get more than five percent.

“When Buhari went to present 2018 Budget there were protests by the senators and members of House of Representatives and it took Saraki and Dogara some time to appease them.

“How could you have a budget for three years and you could not implement 20 per cent of the budget? Where is that done?

“In terms of healthcare delivery, they have performed woefully. If Buhari has headache, ear pain or nose, he would run to London. So, they have failed the country woefully.

“Everybody in this country today is hungry. There is hunger on the streets and there is anger on the faces of the people because APC has failed totally,” he said adding that the opposition party would not zone its governorship slot in Ogun state, would definitely win the election in 2019.

“We don’t support zoning here. That is what is killing the so-called big political parties. Anybody who comes and is acceptable to all of you and you elect him in the primaries, so be it,” he said.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo said the defection of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not good for the ruling political organisation.

The Punch reports that Okorocha stated this after receiving an honorary doctorate degree at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo state on Saturday, December 9.

In pictures: Firefighters battle to contain at least four fires marching across southern California

There are unconfirmed reports that as many as 30 horses may have been injured or killed as the Creek Fire swept through ranches in Sylmar, north of Los Angeles.

Firefighters are battling to contain at least four wildfires marching across southern California, whipped up by fierce Santa Ana winds. The largest and most destructive of the fires is in Ventura County, northwest of Los Angeles. By Tuesday night, the Thomas fire had covered an area of 85 square miles (220 square kilometres) and had reached the Pacific, 30 miles (48 kilometres) away from where it had started a day earlier.

The fire had destroyed at least 150 structures, but incident commander Todd Derum said he suspected "hundreds more" would be lost when flames died down enough to make a thorough assessment.

Mansions and modest homes alike in Ventura were consumed by the fire. The Hawaiian Village apartment complex burned to the ground. The Vista del Mar Hospital, which treats patients with mental problems or substance abuse, including veterans with post-traumatic stress syndrome, suffered fire damage. All patients were safely evacuated.

Another blaze, in the San Fernando Valley on the northern edge of Los Angeles, was estimated to cover more than 17 square miles (44 square kilometres). The Creek Fire forced the evacuation of 2,500 homes near the city's Sylmar neighbourhood.

As the Creek Fire approached ranches near Sylmar, horse owners scrambled to get their animals to safety. There were unconfirmed reports that some were left behind and as many as 30 horses may have been injured or killed.

In addition to prompting hasty evacuations, the fires shut down two freeways for hours and sent heavy, acrid smoke billowing over the Los Angeles area, creating a health hazard for millions.

There were no immediate reports of any deaths. Two people were critically injured in a small San Bernardino County fire, but no other serious injuries were reported. The fires were under investigation and no causes had been found.

The fires are being fanned by dry Santa Ana winds with gusts of well over 60mph, spitting embers up to a half-mile ahead of fire lines. Southern California's Santa Ana winds have long contributed to some of the region's most disastrous wildfires. They blow from the inland toward the Pacific Ocean, speeding up as they squeeze through mountain passes and canyons.

The same vicious winds are also making the firefight more difficult. The water-dropping planes and helicopters essential to taming and containing wildfires have been mostly grounded because it's too dangerous to fly them in the strong wind.

The fires came just eight weeks after the deadliest and most destructive series of wildfires in state history burned through Northern California and its fabled wine country and killed 44 people dead and destroyed 8,900 homes and other buildings.

Fires are not typical in Southern California this time of year but can break out when dry vegetation and too little rain combine with the Santa Ana winds. Hardly any measurable rain has fallen in the region over the past six months.

Fires are likely to become more frequent as climate change makes fire season a year-round threat and will put greater pressure on local budgets, said Char Miller, a professor of environmental analysis at Pomona College who has written extensively about wildfires. "There are going to be far greater numbers that are going to be evacuated, as we're seeing now," Miller said. "These fires are not just fast and furious, but they're really expensive to fight."
