2018: UN chief issues ‘alert’ to the world

As year 2017 winds down, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has issued what he termed “a red alert for the world” ahead of the year 2018.

The UN chief, in a New Year message, expressed regret that in 2017, the world went in reverse to the appeal for peace.

He said that when he assumed office one year ago, he had appealed for 2017 to be a year for peace.

Mr. Guterres said: “On New Year’s Day 2018, I am not issuing an appeal. I am issuing an alert – a red alert for our world.

“Conflicts have deepened and new dangers have emerged. Global anxieties about nuclear weapons are the highest since the Cold War.

“Climate change is moving faster than we are. Inequalities are growing.

“We see horrific violations of human rights. Nationalism and xenophobia are on the rise”.

As the world begins 2018, the UN chief called for global unity.

Mr. Guterres added that he truly believed we could make our world more safe and secure.

“We can settle conflicts, overcome hatred and defend shared values. But we can only do that together,” he said.

The UN chief urged leaders everywhere to make this New Year’s resolution:

“Narrow the gaps. Bridge the divides. Rebuild trust by bringing people together around common goals.”

Mr. Guterres, who assumed office on January 1, 2017, stressed that in 2018, “unity is the path” adding, “our future depends on it”.

“I wish you peace and health in 2018. Thank you. Shokran. Xie Xie. Merci. Spasiba. Gracias. Obrigado,” the ninth UN chief concluded. (NAN)

Role I played in 1966 coup – General Atom Kpera

A former military governor of the defunct East Central State, (currently Anambra State) Brigadier General John Atom Kpera (rtd), has explained his role in the 1966 coup.

Kpera said he got involved in the coup because his Officer Commanding ‘Exercise Damisa’, which he described as ‘orders’.

The former military, who governor narrated his involvement to Daily Trust said, “I was in Kaduna as a second lieutenant in 1966, having returned to Nigeria in August the previous year.

“I joined the engineering section of the military service where I was before the 1966 coup. I was commanding a troop, as it was called in the Engineers while in the infantry it is called a platoon.

“So I was there in Kaduna. I know the next question would be how did it happen? The long and short is that I took part in that coup because my Officer Commanding organised what was called ‘Exercise Damisa’ and on our own we called it orders.

“It was that exercise that we were going for, a training exercise in the night. My whole squadron was also part of the exercise. So we went out there in the night where we could do a night (attack) and then occupy strategic places.

“That was the instruction and my troop was assigned to seize and protect the then National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in Kaduna. After the night attack in the bush our commanders enumerated the various places called VPs (vital points).

“In my own case, I was assigned to defend the Radio station. Within the first night, we did the night attack the Zaria Road, then came to the Radio station, surrounded it and put troops to guard it.

“The Officer Commanding then came and inspected and said, ‘Okay, stand down’ which means you can now go. That was good.

“Then the following night… we assembled at 7 pm, went through the same exercise and my O/C came and inspected, but this time he didn’t say,’ stand down.’

“He just said, ‘Okay, you will get your stand down orders later.’ The following day I saw one officer named J. C. Ojukwu who came and said the exercise was completed and Major Hassan Katsina was with us and I asked him: ‘What are you talking about?’ That was when I started having an idea that it was a coup.

“Then our O/C came and said we should stay on our posts and should not allow anybody to come in or go out. That was the second night when I started having the idea that it was a coup.

“That is why I said I participated in it blindfolded. I wasn’t the only one; all our officers, probably only the Igbo officers knew that it was a coup. In that squadron, we were four that were non-Igbo, every other person was an officer of Igbo extraction. That was how it went.”

Pogba urges misfiring Man Utd to 'wake up'

Paul Pogba has called on Manchester United to "wake up" after a third straight draw over the Christmas period saw them slip behind Chelsea in the Premier League table.

Paul Pogba has called on Manchester United to "wake up" after a third straight draw over the Christmas period saw them slip behind Chelsea in the Premier League table.

Draws against Leicester and Burnley either side of Christmas severely undermined United's status as challengers to Manchester City and Saturday's 0-0 stalemate at home to Southampton means they are now third in the standings, 14 points adrift of City.

The problems are mounting for manager Jose Mourinho, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's knee problem keeping him out for a month and Romelu Lukaku taken off on a stretcher after a nasty clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt.

United may also be expecting contact from the Football Association after footage emerged of Ashley Young apparently elbowing Dusan Tadic in the stomach.

Everton await on New Year's Day and Pogba has demanded better from his side, despite the short turnaround.

"We didn't lose but we have to wake up, bounce back and get back to winning," the Frenchman told MUTV, United's in-house TV channel.

"We drew again. Three draws we have to win, something has to change and we have to change to win.

"It's only one day and then we have to play against Everton -- that's football. Tomorrow's another day and we have to go out there and win."

On the mid-match injury to top-scorer Lukaku, Pogba said: "When we have Romelu, he makes it difficult for defenders and creates so much space as well. He's a big miss for us but we have the team to fill the gap of Romelu."

Medical staff took every precaution in treating a potentially concerning head injury, placing the Belgian on a stretcher and fitting an oxygen mask.

By full-time Mourinho was confident the worst-case scenarios had been ruled out and was instead predicting a two-match lay-off for the forward.

As for Young, who has been one of United's most consistent performers this season, the possibility of a three-match ban lingers.

That is the tariff handed to Burnley defender James Tarkowski earlier this month after he admitted a charge of violent conduct for elbowing Brighton striker Glenn Murray.

Bride dies shortly after getting married to the love of her life (photos) - Nigeria News, Nigeria Entertainment News

A Connecticut woman married the love of her life from her hospital bed on Dec. 22, two years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Bridesmaid Christina Karas captured the triumph and joy moments after Heather Lindsay, 31, and David Mosher said their “I do’s.”

The image of Lindsay throwing her arms up has since gone viral.

“She’s getting to shout from the rooftops that she loves Dave and is able to say, ‘I’m his wife,’” Karas told TV station WFSB.
“It reminds me of someone who is crossing the finish line of a marathon or something,” Mosher, 35, said of the photo.

Lindsay succumbed to her illness hours after she tied the knot at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn.

The couple met at a dance class in 2015, and within a year Mosher was ready to propose.

He did just that, complete with a horse-drawn carriage, after Lindsay was diagnosed with cancer Dec. 23, 2015.
Over the next year, Karas helped Lindsay plan the wedding of her dreams.

“She was so hopeful,” Karas told NBC. “The way we would talk about it, you always kind of felt this isn’t it.”

They pushed up the wedding originally scheduled for Dec. 30 and intended to just lay the wedding dress across Lindsay, whom they feared was too weak to put it on. But she made it into her gown and to the hospital’s chapel, where she exchanged vows with Mosher.

“That moment right there was like, ‘Death, I’m not afraid of you! I am so in love and I am going to celebrate that love right now,’” Karas recalled.

Lindsay was buried Saturday, the day that was meant to be her wedding day.
