Photos: Woman sets house ablaze trying to kill bedbugs

A woman trying to kill bed bugs accidentally set a multi-family home ablaze in Avondale late Friday, Cincinnati fire officials said.

Three people were taken to a hospital and 10 were displaced from the residence on Hutchins Avenue, said District 3 Fire Chief Randy Freel.

Damage was set at $250,000.

Flames broke out about midnight Friday when a woman in a first floor unit tried to kill bedbugs with alcohol that ignited near an open flame, either a candle or burning incense, he said.

Fire was shooting from the first floor when fire crews arrived about midnight, Freel said.

Firefighters helped an elderly woman walk out of the building who could not see through the smoke, Freel said.

Local Fox affiliate WXIX reported that, three adults were overcome with smoke inhalation and went to a hospital for treatment, he said. They are expected to recover.

In all, seven adults and three teenagers were displaced from the five-unit multi-family home.

The American Red Cross is helping them with temporary lodging, clothing and meals.

"When I got here the whole house was on fire," said one of the residents, Kamaron Lyshe.

He rushed home from work when someone called to alert him and shot a Facebook Live video as fire tore through the building and shot through the roof.

He was in shock Saturday morning as he stood looking at what was left of the building.

"I'm kind of dealing with it now. I'll start from scratch," he said. "It's like a dream....everything is burnt. I'll start fresh. It's all we can do now."

This is the second major residential fire in two weeks set by someone trying to kill bedbugs, according to the Cincinnati Fire Department.

Fire officials have a word of advice for anyone wanting to get rid of the persistent pests:

"Get a professional," Freel said.

BUSINESS: New firm enters Nigeria’s real estate market

Chief Executive Officer, IREP Nigeria, Erejuwa Gbadebo (left); Managing Director, IREP Holdings, Kenny McCrae and Executive Director, IREP Nigeria /Group Managing Director, Alpha Mead Group, Femi Akintunde at the unveiling of IREP Nigeria in Lagos

In a move projected by real estate analysts to disrupt market status quo in the near future, International Real Estate Partners (IREP) has been launched into Nigeria’s property market to offer end-to-end real estate solutions to corporate tenants.

The new firm says it will leverage on its strategic alliance with IREP Holdings – a reputable Global Real Estate service firm – to demystify the regular challenges that characterise the commercial segment of property market by offering bespoke real estate solutions that cut across transactional management, project management and trans-border facilities management to prospective tenants.

“Our mission in Nigeria’s real estate market is quite simple but strategic; mirror global standards to deliver value driven real estate solutions that significantly impacts the bottom line of every business that interfaces with IREP” Chief Executive Officer, IREP Nigeria, Mrs. Erejuwa Gbadebo, said at a press conference to herald the new firm in Lagos.

Erejuwa explained that with the property market set to gain momentum in the near future, the need to offer savvy investors, asset owners and corporate tenants bespoke services that speaks to the needs of the local environment but equally aligns with global best standards has become even more imperative.

Collaborating Erejuwa’s claim, Mr. Kenny McCrae, Managing Director, IREP Holdings, Dubai, enthused that IREP Nigeria has been structured to execute its operations, transact its businesses and deliver its unique service offering with tremendous support from the parent company.

“Given our rich background and interaction in the global space, and having been closely associated with the Nigerian real estate sector for over a decade, we clearly understand the opportunities and challenges associated with the West African Real Estate market especially Nigeria, however, we are not deterred by the limitations, rather we believe our best-in-class service, which has soared our client portfolio in recent times, will distinguish us from our contemporaries in the marketplace.” McCrae said.

Speaking on the need for international Real Estate service providers such IREP to participate fully in the commercial segment of the property market, Femi Akintunde, Group Managing Director, Alpha Mead Group and Director IREP explained that Nigeria has become a critical component of the Global Real Estate market owing to the government’s commitment to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the country.

“While the government continues to make frantic to effort to lure FDIs into the country, the onus is on us as professionals to live up to the expectation of these foreign firms from a real estate perspective,” Akintude said.

According to him, there are an appreciable number of global transactions in the Real Estate market worldwide but it’s quite disturbing that Sub Saharan African is often seen as the black box in the scheme of things, as the players in the country’s Real Estate scene have been slow to position the quality of their service to reflect global best practices.

“This limitation informed our decision to partner with IREP which has the right pedigree, platform, network, focus to deliver premium Real Estate support services to clients across all sectors of the economy”, Engr. Akintunde further explained.
To him, this partnership is a strategic one for the Alpha Mead Group, because it collaborates the Group’s position to be a business entity that specializes in providing a quality, safe, secured and comfortable living and operating environment in terms of residential, office space, retail malls etc.

“For us, we consider this as our contribution to ease operational bottlenecks for international clients and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in from a Real Estate perspective”, he further stressed.

He however called on the government to further improve the means of doing business in the country; by quickening business registration process, and easing the statutory, legislative and legal frameworks to business operations in the country, noting that this will open even more opportunities for local and international stakeholders in the real estate space.

Nigeria: Custodian Life Launches Critical Illness Insurance Cover

Custodian Life Insurance Ltd, a member of the Custodian and Allied Group, has launched a special life insurance policy tagged, 'Critical Illness Insurance Cover' for those suffering from critical and terminal illnesses such as stroke, cancer, heart attack and Renal failures.

The company, which described the product as a standalone policy of its kind in Nigeria said the launching the product was informed by the present economic and health difficulties in Nigeria and to assist millions of Nigerians who are victims of the above illnesses address their health challenges.

"We are well aware of the current economic, health difficulties in our country today, for us at Custodian Life Insurance, tough times are for us to get tougher and not use the current climate as a negative block but rather an energising spring-board for new ideas. It is on the back of this that we are today launching the critical illness insurance cover which we are confident will assist millions of Nigerians to address their health challenges", the Managing Director Custodian Life Insurance, Larry Ademeso said.

According to him, unlike the group life insurance policy which benefits are paid to dependents of the policy holder at his death, in the case of the critical illness insurance cover, the policy holder is six times more likely to claim under his critical illness cover than under the group life cover.

"Employers in Nigeria today are required by law to provide group life insurance cover for their employees, that is as far as the story goes, benefits will be paid to your beneficiaries when you would have passed away, so what happens if you do not die but become incapacitated by some of the debilitating illnesses ravaging the populace, this is why we developed the critical illness cover to meet the yearnings of Nigerians".

According to the Custodian Life Insurance boss, the Custodian Critical Illness cover, offers the policy holder added protection and confidence boost to go about his daily activities without fear of possible financial backslash associated with treating a critical illness.

He quoted the World Health Organisation as saying that Nigeria, has the highest cancer rate in Africa while there is increasing precedence of stroke just as about 10 percent of adult Nigerian population is liable to have heart attack.

He listed key features of the product as enhanced protection, coverage against conditions that fall under cancer, stroke, heart attack, kidney failure.

He said the premium paid and benefit received are per the prevailing tax laws, adding that the intending policy holder can choose period of coverage.

The sum assured for the policy according to Ademeso, is minimum of N1million while the term is minimum of five years.

He also said eligible buyers of the product are people from 20 years to 60 years while the premium is paid annually.

He said since Custodian is the first company in Nigeria to sell the policy, in future, other conditions that make the policy more attractive and enable those who paid premium many years without benefiting may be considered.

Falana reveals those supplying arms to Boko Haram

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana (SAN) revealed the source of the Boko Haram sect’s arms.

Falana said arms and ammunition used by the terrorist sect were looted from the armory in Libya.

He also blamed the slave trade in Libya to the fallout from the removal and brutal killing of President Muammar Gaddafi by armed gangs.

The senior lawyer disclosed this on Sunday in a statement in Lagos titled: “Why Nigerian victims of slavery cannot sue Libya”.

He said “Today, not less than five armed gangs are laying claim to the leadership of the country.

“It has been confirmed that the arms and ammunition looted from the armory in Libya were sold to the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

“It is also true that the shameful slave trade which Nigeria is battling with is part of the fallout from the removal and brutal killing of President Muammar Gaddafi by armed gangs supported by the allied forces of imperialism led by the United States under President Barrack Obama.”
