The 6 feet long and 3 feet wide cake has a stable, a tiny Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, surrounded by cows, sheep, shepherds and three wise men.

The town is full of intricate details like a market, where vendors sell spices, fish, meat and more. The windows are made to glow with hidden LED lights.

The purpose of the cake

The baker, Lynn Nolan, told HuffPost that she made the cake in order to raise money for a local school, the Youlgrave Church of England Primary School.

According to her, “I made the village of Bethlehem cake to raise money for a new playground.”

This masterpiece was made with 44 pounds of butter, 110 pounds of marzipan and 1 gallon of whisky.

Russia defends opposition leader's election ban

The Kremlin on Tuesday rejected concerns that its decision to ban opposition leader Alexei Navalny from running against President Vladimir Putin in a March election could undermine the vote's legitimacy.

The Kremlin on Tuesday rejected concerns that its decision to ban opposition leader Alexei Navalny from running against President Vladimir Putin in a March election could undermine the vote's legitimacy.

The European Union weighed in to the controversy meanwhile, warning that the ban cast "serious doubt" on the election.

Russia's Central Election Commission on Monday rejected Navalny's bid to take on Putin in the March presidential poll, citing a controversial embezzlement conviction.

The 41-year-old lawyer maintains that the case against him is politically motivated. He urged his supporters to stage a "vote strike" instead.

Navalny is seen by many as the only Russian opposition leader who stands a fighting chance of challenging Putin.

Observers have expressed concern that barring Navalny from running would affect the legitimacy of the March poll and could affect voter turnout.

"We cannot agree with this point of view," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.

He insisted that barring Navalny from running "can in no way affect the legitimacy of the election".

Peskov also said any calls to boycott the election should be "rigorously studied" -- a thinly veiled threat of punishment.

EU external services spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said the ban on Navalny "casts a serious doubt on political pluralism in Russia and the prospect of democratic elections next year", in a statement on Tuesday.

"Politically-motivated charges should not be used against political participation," she said.

"We expect the Russian authorities to ensure that there is a level playing field, including in the presidential elections that will take place on 18 March."

Navalny has built a robust protest movement in the face of persistent harassment and jumped through multiple hoops as he stumped for votes across the country.

On Sunday, more than 15,000 supporters from 20 cities formally endorsed his nomination bid.

Earlier this month, Putin clearly indicated that Navalny would not be allowed to run.

Asked why, Putin - who has refused to mention Navalny by name in public -- said the opposition was hoping for a "coup" but would not succeed.

Here's how your tax bracket will change in 2018

Income tax brackets are set to change in 2018 under the Republican tax bill.

Income tax brackets are set to change in 2018 under the Republican tax bill. The bill proposes keeping seven tax brackets, but the income ranges will change. It also eliminates the personal exemption and increases the standard deduction.

Congress has passed the massive Republican tax bill.

The bill, called the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, is heading to President Donald Trump's desk for a signature to enact it, though it's unclear when that will happen.

The bill is set to make sweeping changes to the tax code for businesses and, on average, American taxpayers.

Here's how this new tax plan will change federal income tax brackets in 2018 compared with those in 2017.

First, for single filers:

null  (Elena Holodny/Business Insider)

10%: $0 to $9,525 of taxable income for an individual12%: $9,526 to $38,70022%: $38,701 to $82,50024%: $82,501 to $157,50032%: $157,501 to $200,00035%: $200,001 to $500,00037%: over $500,001

And second, for joint filers:

null  (Elena Holodny/Business Insider)

10%: $0 to $19,050 for married joint filers12%: $19,051 to $77,40022%: $77,401 to $165,00024%: $165,001 to $315,00032%: $315,001 to $400,00035%: $400,001 to $600,00037%: Over $600,000

Under the final version of the Republican plan, there will still be seven federal income tax brackets — but at slightly lower rates and adjusted income ranges.

About 70% of Americans claim the standard deduction when filing their taxes, and their paychecks will almost certainly increase — albeit slightly.

In 2017, the standard deduction for a single taxpayer is $6,350, plus one personal exemption of $4,050.

The Republican bill combines those into one larger standard deduction for 2018: $12,000 for single filers and $24,000 for joint filers.

NSCDC deploys personnel to filling stations

The Corps Commandant in the state, Mr Steve Amoga, made this disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Tuesday.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has deployed its personnel to filling stations in Enugu State to maintain law and order, as motorists and motorcyclists struggle to buy petrol.

The Corps Commandant in the state, Mr Steve Amoga, made this disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Tuesday.

Amoga said the corps personnel were deployed to NNPC Mega Filling Stations and major marketers’ filling stations that sell fuel at the pump price of N145 but had to contend with long queues.

“What we have decided to do is to ensure deployment of our personnel to filling stations with long queues in order to ensure that the lines keep flowing.

“Troublemakers are checked from distorting the queues and causing hardship for law-abiding citizens, who have decided to follow the queues diligently,” he said.

Amoga said that the operation’s mandate only covered orderliness in the filling stations.

The commandant assured the residents of the state, that the deployment would ease the current long queues in the filling stations and make life better for them.

“I believe that the long queues in these filling stations will be a thing of the past, as the current orderly flow engineered by the NSCDC will ensure that motorists get petrol on time.

“The deployment will eliminate all forms of disagreement and quarrels on queues that made most motorists spent nights at the filling stations,” he said.

The NSCDC chief, however, advised residents to be mindful of the activities of the security personnel deployed to their areas and report any suspicious object, movement and persons to NSCDC personnel this yuletide.

“When you see any face or group of people unknown to you, lurking around your vehicle, building and premises, please do report to the NSCDC, so that our intelligence officers can come around.

NAN reports that the NSCDC deployed 2,000 personnel in Enugu State to ensure the safety of lives and property of residents at yuletide.

The NSCDC officers and men in uniform and plain-clothes, who are on 24-hour operation, are expected to man strategic locations to protect the citizenry as well as public infrastructure.

An Egyptian court sentenced a British woman to three years in prison on Tuesday, convicting her of trying to smuggle drugs into the country, a judicial official said.

Laura Plummer, 33, was arrested at Hurghada airport when customs officers found almost 300 Tramadol pills in her luggage.

The strong painkiller is tightly controlled in Egypt where it is often abused as a recreational drug.

Plummer and her relatives had told British media that she was bringing the painkillers for her Egyptian boyfriend who suffers from back pain.

The verdict can be appealed.

ON UPDATE: We talked to Charles Schwab's investment strategist about what 2018 holds for equities, the Fed, and bitcoin

Jeffrey Kleintop, Charles Schwab's chief investment strategist, talks about what 2018 holds for equities, investment opportunities, and bitcoin.

Business Insider recently spoke with Jeffrey Kleintop, Charles Schwab's chief investment strategist, about what 2018 holds for equities, investment opportunities, and bitcoin. Schwab manages $320 billion in assets.Kleintop thinks equities can continue to rally in 2018 because of continued earnings growth fueled by the expansion of global economies. He thinks the flattening of yield curves could point to a recession in 2019 or later."The most important thing is to go global," he said when asked where to invest.

Following is a transcript of the interview as aired on "The Bottom Line." It has been edited for clarity.

Sara Silverstein: Equity valuations are by most measures at their all-time highs, and a lot of people are wondering, is this the top? Can they continue higher?

Jeffrey Kleintop: I think 2018 could be a really good year. It'll be the first year of back-to-back, broad global economic growth that we've seen in more than a decade. Every one of the world's 45 largest economies is going to grow next year, very likely. That means further earnings growth. That was the secret to 2017's success. It was really about earnings growth rising every month, pushing stocks higher every month. We could see that again in 2018. The only concern I would have is this: Yield curves are beginning to flatten out a little bit. This usually could be bad news for those high valuations, could point to a recession in 2019 or beyond. So while 2018 looks good, you have to keep on watch.

Silverstein: For 2018, is there anything you're watching that might concern you that could lead to an equity crash?

Kleintop: There are a number of risks. China's economic growth — certainly a potential for a slowdown there could shock the rest of the world. Emerging markets have been a big part of why stocks did so well in 2017.

Natural disasters, geopolitics — all these things that are ever present in the markets could come back to be a risk in 2018, particularly if economic growth begins to slow later in the year. That could create some vulnerabilities we didn't see in 2017, where politics, geopolitics, and the like really couldn’t nudge the markets very much at all.

Chinese President Xi Jinping.  (Reuters)

Silverstein: You didn't mention the Fed or inflation at all. You're not worried about the Fed?

Kleintop: Not so much. I think we're actually starting to see a clearer path for inflation. Inflation expectations are beginning to tick up, and that means the personalities at the Fed and other central banks matter less because the data is going to matter more. Currently, the expectations in the market are for the Fed to do two, maybe as many as three rate hikes next year. I think the market is braced for that. I don't think it will be a big risk.

Silverstein: Is there a particular place that you think is a great place to invest?

Kleintop: The most important thing is to go global. Usually, in the last year or two of a business cycle, international stocks tend to outperform US stocks. They’re more cyclical, they're more inflation-sensitive, and valuations look a little bit more attractive, too. But one thing you have to keep in mind is don't concentrate. You want to be broad and really be diversified.

Traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.  (Thomson Reuters)

Here's why. Usually we always look for a certain sector or country that's going to do well, but for the first time in 20 years, correlations have come down. Now, this is important, this is how different markets behave relative to each other. So we're seeing the lowest correlations, meaning the best benefit from diversification, in 20 years. You don't want to overlook that. For some investors, this is the best environment for global diversification they've ever seen in their investing careers.

Silverstein: When we talk about high valuations and equities, we're also seeing extremely high valuations in tech. Do you feel differently about tech than the rest of equities?

Kleintop: We still like tech, actually, and I think it's business spending. It needs to pick up in 2018. Tech will benefit from that. Maybe not the consumer side of tech, which has really been where the markets have been focused on. Maybe more the business spending side of technology where the valuations aren’t quite as high but could see more earnings momentum in 2018.

Silverstein: What do you think the impact of tax reform will be for equities in 2018?

Kleintop: The thing about tax reforms is it's not just in the US. We're seeing it everywhere. Many countries have cut corporate taxes in the last few years. The budget in France — they've already proposed some corporate tax cuts for next year. In Japan, they've already put it in the legislation; it's already baked in. They're phasing it in next year. In Germany, the coalition talks are coming around — one of the only things they can agree on is some corporate tax cuts. So we may see that across the board next year. A further lift of profits in 2018 should be good news for investors who continue to be very focused on profit growth.

Silverstein: Is that generally already priced in to global equity prices?

Kleintop: Well, I think there's some optimism about that taking place, but we're not seeing analysts putting it in their estimates yet, and that's key because stocks tracked estimates in 2017.

Silverstein: I have to ask about bitcoin. A lot of people are calling it a bubble. What do you think, and what are your clients asking you about?

Kleintop: I get this question a lot everywhere I go, all around the country, really, all around the world. The big question about bitcoin is, is it a bubble? From the fear of "Did I miss it?" But also "What happens if the bubble bursts?" We know what happened when the dot-com bubble burst. We know what happened when the housing bubble burst. But I think the bitcoin bubble, if you want to call it that, is something different. If prices for bitcoin were to plunge suddenly, because it's so independent from the financial system, it's kind of its own thing. It hasn't yet become embedded in the economy and the financial structure.

NEWS: $1bn not too much to fight insecurity — FG

LAGOS—THE allocation of $1 billion from the Excess Crude Accounts, ECA, to address threats from Boko Haram and other conflict issues in the country is not too much in the light of continued threats against lives and property, the Federal Government has said.

Speaking in defence of the approval of $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account by the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed cautioned that issues pertaining to the security of the country must not be put on the altar of politics, noting that the ruling party was itself also once in opposition and was itself careful on those issues.

Mohammed, who addressed newsmen in Lagos, yesterday, also affirmed that the $1 billion would also be applied towards addressing other security threats, including illegal oil bunkering, kidnapping and cattle rustling.

Noting that criticisms to the allocation of the fund were unnecessary, he said:  “The fact that Boko Haram has been largely degraded does not mean the war is over. As we have said times without number, asymmetric wars like the one against Boko Haram do not end with an armistice. It is therefore, curious that some of those who have criticised the $1billion approval have hinged their argument on the fact that the Boko Haram has been degraded. Perhaps also, the critics do not know that fighting an asymmetric war is costlier than fighting a conventional war. In any case, wars, especially the war against terror, are never fought with budgetary provisions.

“The Scriptures say to whom much is given, much is expected. That also presupposes that to whom much is expected, much is given. The Nigeria Governors Forum acted wisely in approving the withdrawal of $1bn from the ECA to fight Boko Haram and other security challenges in the country.

“Now, is $1bn too much for the military to tackle these challenges at this time? I say not by any stretch of imagination. After all, security of lives and property is at the core of the existence of any government and the NGF understands this quite well, going by its action in approving the withdrawal from the ECA.

“There is nothing wrong in the opposition offering constructive criticism. We understand this clearly because we were in the trenches until May 29, 2015. Democracy allows the citizens to freely air their opinions. But it is not a licence for anyone to distort facts, engage in crass sensationalism or bring partisanship to every issue, not the least one that concerns the security of the nation. Those who viewed this $1bn  approval by the NGF from the prism of partisanship are wrong. The military is undoubtedly the most national of all our institutions. It serves all Nigerians, irrespective of their religion, ethnicity or political party. It should never be dragged into the partisan arena.

“Had the military been better equipped to tackle Boko Haram in the early days of the insurgency, thousands of lives, including those of our service men and women, could have been saved; the war could have been over a long time ago. If the funds meant to equip the military have not been diverted into private pockets, there may be no need today to withdraw any money from the ECA for that purpose.”

NEWS UPDATE: Guatemala joins U.S., moves embassy to Jerusalem

This file picture taken on September 19, 2017 shows Guatemala’s President Jimmy Morales addressing the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York on September 19, 2017.Guatemala’s President Morales announced in his Twitter account on December 24, 2017 he gave instructions to his foreign minister that the country’s embassy in Israel should be moved to Jerusalem. / AFP PHOTO / Jewel SAMAD

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales has ordered the move of the country’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Last week, Guatemala was one of only nine nations to vote against a United Nations (UN) resolution urging America to reverse its recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

In a Facebook post, Morales said the decision was taken after he had spoken with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Sunday, Morales, in the post said: “Dear people of Guatemala, today I spoke with the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. We are talking about the excellent relations that we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the state of Israel.

“One of the most important topics was the return of the embassy of Guatemala to Jerusalem. So I inform you that I have instructed the chancellor to initiate the respective coordination so that it may be. God bless you.”

The status of Jerusalem goes to the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state and its final status is meant to be discussed in the latter stages of peace talks.
Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem has never been recognised internationally, and all countries currently maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv.

US President Donald Trump, earlier in December, recognized the city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said it has started making contact with 10 countries to move their embassies to Jerusalem following US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise the city as capital of Israel.

The Ministry said “at least 10 countries” from different parts of the world that are mulling over moving their embassies to Jerusalem.

Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said, “We are in contact with at least ten countries, some of them in Europe.”

This came after Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales announced the relocation of his country’s embassy to Jerusalem.

In response, Netanyahu praised the move, saying, “God bless you, my friend.”
Guatemala was one of two Central American countries, alongside neighbouring Honduras, to vote against the resolution.

I Used To Smoke, Kept Many Girlfriends But I Never Tasted Alcohol, Here Are The Most Shocking Things About President Buhari You Never Knew

In this concluding part of the interview President
Muhammadu Buhari granted Eric osagie, The SunMD/Editor-in-Chief in company of Paulinus Aidoghie in 2012, he explains why he is not super rich despite being former Head of State.
But don’t you think you went too far?

What do you mean by going too far?
But you went to the extreme that public officers could do no wrong, as if they were saints. You called the decree ‘Protection of Public Officers Against False Accusation,’ and clamped down on the media.
Those who did it, the editors, the reporters, we jailed them. But we never closed a whole institution, as others did. We investigated and prosecuted according to the laws, because shutting a newspaper, it is an institution and we lose thousands of jobs. But we found out who made that false report, who was the editor, who okayed it and then, we jailed them.

No regret?
No regret, because we did it according to the laws we made. We neither closed a whole institution and caused job losses.
Then, you left power, 20 months after…
No. I was sent packing from power.
Ok, you didn’t leave on your own volition?
No.
That is a good one. For Nigerians, they remember War Against Indiscipline you brought. What was the philosophy behind it?
Well, I think we realised that the main problem of
Nigeria , then and now, was indiscipline and corruption. When I say we, I mean the Supreme
Military Council. Those two, are Nigeria’s Achilles heels. And I believe the Nigeria elite knew it then and they know it now. So, we started to discipline them. People must realise their level in the society and accept it. If you go and read hard and get a PhD, certainly you will get the best of life than somebody who hasn’t been to school at all or who has been a drop-out. And then, in the public, people must behave responsibly. If you go to bus stops, it is step-by-step or turn-by-turn, and not to force your way. If you go to bank, you find out if people were there before you. Why can’t you go behind them?
Or you come early and be number one.
Exactly! I think that was accepted. And up till now, I think it is the only thing that survived out of our administration, the queue culture . People accepted it with calmness. And in Lagos , they wouldn’t like to associate themselves with the military, so they call it KAI. That is right. Kick Against Indiscipline. But it is still the same thing. It is the same. The only difference is that one was brought by the military and this one is through democratic system.
When you were eased out of power and you had time to reflect for three years, what did you then see that was wrong?
We gave them the opportunity in the three councils I told you. Those rules are supposed to be in the Nigerian archives, except somebody destroyed them, destroyed the evidence. Otherwise, what did we do wrong to warrant being sacked? For example, when we overthrew the Second Republic, we had what we called the SIP, the Special Investigation Panel that comprised the police, the National Security Organisation (NSO) then and the intelligence community of the military. We did nothing by impulse or ad hoc. We went through the system.
And then, you handed down long jail terms, some 100 years. That was something else. Why did you do that?
They would never see the daylight again to commit another crime against humanity.
Would you say your detention period made you a new person?
I think I have always been the same person. When I came out, I was amazed, amazed in the sense that people in my immediate constituency didn’t seem to bother about the major setback I had. They were still coming to me, expecting me to help them in a way. Not in terms of material help, because they knew that I didn’t operate any money house or any petroleum bloc or any filling station…
How can you say a whole oil minister like you didn’t have any oil licence?
No. Not one, and not any for any blood relation or anybody close to me. Really, somehow, people in my community felt that I can still help them. But with that setback, I was wondering how. So, the only way for me, I think, was to join partisan politics so that I can have a platform to speak about the opinion of my constituency, immediate constituency. But the thing that convinced me more than the pressure from immediate locality was the change in 1991, the collapse of the Soviet Union. I have said this so often that an empire in the 20th century, collapsed and a lot of people ran back home, leaving strategic installations behind, like missile sites, nuclear formation and so on. And now, there are about 18 to 19 or 20 republics. It was then that I believed, personally, in my own assessment, that multi-party democratic system was and is still superior to despotism.
That was your turning point?
That was the turning point. But there is a big caveat: elections must be free and fair! And that is what we need. Elections must be free and fair, otherwise, the whole thing will be something else.
During your tenure, one case kept coming up: the 53 suitcases. You had ordered the border shut and your Aide de Camp (ADC), Major Jokolo, was alleged to have escorted 53 suitcases into the country. What happened? Why were you selective?
There was nothing like 53 suitcases. What happened was that there was my chief of protocol; he is now late. He had three wives, and I think about 12 children. He was in Saudi Arabia as Nigeria Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He was in Libya before, as ambassador and later, he was posted to Saudi Arabia. And then, I appointed him as my chief of protocol and he was coming back. Three wives, about 12 children. And then, by some coincidence, the late Emir of Gwandu, the father of Jokolo, who was my ADC then, was coming back with the same flight. And somehow, some mischievous fellows, everything, including the handbag of maybe, their small daughters, were counted as suitcases. Atiku then was the Commandant of Murtala Muhammed Airport as
customs officer. And that day, we were playing squash. Jokolo my ADC and I. At some point, I said to him, ‘Mustapha, is your father not coming back today again?’ He said, ‘yes, sir, he is coming.’ I said, ‘what are you doing here? Why can’t you go and meet your father?’ He said yes, sir. He went to wash and meet his father. I am telling you there was no 53 bags of suitcases. It was a bloody lie. It was a bloody mischief.
So, not that he was detailed?
No, he was not detailed. He was not even about to go. I was the one who made him to go and meet his father. He was a respected emir, in fact, if not the most respected emir in the North then. He was learned, he had fantastic credibility and personal integrity. And this man was just coming on posting with his wives and children and they counted every imaginable thing, they said 53 suitcases.
Was that why Atiku was retired?
I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t think I retired Atiku. I can’t recall because I had nothing against anybody.
But the argument was that the border was ordered shut. So, how did those people then come in?
They came by air. We didn’t stop aircraft coming in. They came by air, from Jedda to Lagos. They didn’t drive through Chad to Maiduguri and… People just say 53 suitcases when all borders had been ordered shut because that is how you can sell your papers.
Then you came into politics and every election you are there. Would you still do politics at 70 years, elective politics, offering yourself for election?
This is what I told the audience that came to listen to my address before we started the campaign for the 2011 elections. But my party and supporters were sending representatives. Up till today, they haven’t stopped. But what I told them was that we are in the process now of reorganising the party and perhaps, come into an alignment with other parties. Whatever the parties decide, whether my party or the new party that align and we are hoping to develop; if they give me the ticket or recommend me, I will consider it. That is the position we are now.
Until you get to that stage you can give a definite answer?
Until we get to that stage, there is no clear answer now. Let’s wait and see.
Is it that you don’t like money? Anytime somebody sees you, they say General Buhari is so austere. What gave you that kind of lifestyle? Nobody is associating you with millions. My reporter here was pointing to one mansion of a former governor who just ruled for eight years. So, how did you develop this frugal lifestyle? Is it that you don’t like good life? How do you unwind? Well, some of us have heard that you used to smoke. Do you still smoke? What are those things you have given up?
I used to smoke, but of course, I abandoned it I think in 1977.
Oh really? Before you became head of state?
Yes, I stopped smoking.
Have you ever taken alcohol?
No.
Never?
Never.
Even as a young man and all that?
No, no. Even in the military tradition, how they break you in, I said well, the military did not stop anybody practising his religion. My religion said no alcohol and no alcohol. So, that was respected. I was never forced to take alcohol and I have never voluntarily taken it because I want to remain alert all the time. There is a tendency that when you drink, you would want to have a bottle more, or a glass more and do something stupid.
As a young man, very handsome because I saw some of your old pictures, did you have women flocking around you? And women like soldiers, people who have power…
I also thought women ought to have taken more interest in me but I don’t know why they didn’t. I must have something they didn’t like. I assure you of that. I didn’t drink, I smoked, I had girlfriends; it was true.
How many did you have?
I hope you won’t publish this because my wife will read the interview. So, you will be very kind to me if you don’t publish that (general laughter).
You joined the army and there was coup and counter-coup and civil war. You still had time to unwind?
You can create it but we had too much eventful time, professional career. It was too eventful. There were too many things happening almost at the same time. If I could recall, the 30 months civil war that we had, I was just having two weeks after every six months to come back home just to see my old mother and some of my relatives because I refused to get married till after the war.
Was it deliberate?
It was deliberate.
Why? I thought that would have been the reason to get married.
No, no. Some of our colleagues, like late Vatsa, like Babangida, they were more adventurous than myself. They took a weekend and had a quick
marriage and went back to the front. I thought I would be putting the poor girl or the poor woman under a lot of stress. So, I said if I survived the war, I would get married, but if I didn’t survive, no woman should cry for me other than my relatives.
Some of your General-colleagues became stupendously rich. Today, they have means. I am not a lawyer taking inventory of your assets or preparing your will, but tell me what property do you have now at 70? I am sure you have a house in Abuja , you have one in Lagos. You have one in Daura and you have one here ( Kaduna ). So, if I count your property, maybe five. Am I right or wrong?
You are right but am not going to read or declare with you. My assets were on record, I told some of your colleagues when they came. When Murtala/Obasanjo regime came, they made sure that certain grades of public officers must declare their assets when they assumed that office and they must declare when they were leaving. So, when I was sworn in as governor of North East, I declared my assets.
What did you declare?
I declared surprisingly, even the number of my cows then. Even if they were supposed to be producing every year, but I declared them the time I was there. And when I was leaving governorship, I became petroleum minister. When I was leaving to go to War College, I declared my assets. I could recall General Jemibewon then, was the Adjutant-General of the Army. He rang me and said he was sending me asset declaration form, that I must fill it, sign it before I left for the United States. And I did. General Jemibewon is still alive. And when I became head of state eventually, I declared my assets again. So, all of us; when I say that, I mean Obasanjo downwards, those who are alive who were governors , ministers , head of states, they had declared assets. So, if you people are serious and interested about political officers becoming multi-billionaires, you can find out from Murtala downwards. And those of us who were not very good in making money you should pity us.
Is it that you don’t like money?
Everybody likes money but I am not very good at making money. Let me put it that way. I borrowed from the banks to build the house in Daura and the one in Abuja that you mentioned and the one in Kano. The bank then was Barclays, now Union Bank. Kaduna State or North Central then housing scheme and the Federal Mortgage Bank for the house I am in and AIB, which was, I think, terminated by Central Bank. So, when you go through the records, you find out that the houses I built, I borrowed from there.
You are a respected former head of state. What is your relationship with others, Obasanjo, your former boss and at a point, your political opponent, General Babangida, the man who took over from you and then, Shagari…
You are very nice. He took over from me and I took over from Shagari. You are very nice.
I want to be polite.
You are very nice. Ok, carry on.
What is your relationship with them. I see some parts of patching up here and there, but when a man is 70, you say it the way it is. What is your relationship with all these people I have mentioned now, deep down?
I think the worst thing anybody can do to oneself is to have either hatred or grudge on daily basis. One thing will happen and you better forget.
Have you forgiven Babangida now? You once said you felt betrayed over the coup against your
government?
I did. Publicly, I did.
You have?
I have and some of your papers published it. I said as a Muslim, I have forgiven him.
But during that period it happened, you must have been really angry?
Of course, I was angry because I can’t recall what I had done for him to mobilise the military to overthrow me and detain me for more than three years. Yeah, it is natural for me to be upset.
Were you going to retire him before your overthrow, as has been alleged? This is an opportunity to lay it because we have heard those speculations that you were going to retire him and he moved against you quickly.
Something like that happened but not him. I moved to retire his Director of Military Intelligence.
Akilu?
General Aliyu, not Akilu.
Aliyu?
Aliyu Gusau.
You were going to retire him?
Yes. I took a paper to Army Council. Babangida was there…
As the Chief of Army Staff?
Yes. Idiagbon was there, Bali was there as Minister of Defence, and I was there as the head of state and commander-in-chief. And reasons for him to be removed was in that memo. Go and find out from him or from Babangida. They are both alive.
Not against Babangida per se?
No.
But if you touched Gusau, his intelligence chief, invariably, you were going to inch towards the Chief of Army Staff, Babangida. Eventually, he might have been touched.
I didn’t know but at that point, it was Aliyu Gusau.
You were inching closer?
Yes, we were inching closer. You could say that.
But you have forgiven him for all that happened.
I have forgiven him. I said it and it was printed by some of your colleagues. But I didn’t say it will be forgotten. It cannot be forgotten. If I say I forget about it, I will be lying. But I have forgiven him, just as I expect Shagari to forgive me as the one who succeeded him.
But Shagari said you detained him and then…
I too, was detained (general laughter).
Ok, whatof Obasanjo? What kind of relationship do you have?
Obasanjo; he mobilized Nigerian voters against me.
But you have forgiven him?
No, I haven’t forgiven him (laughter).
Finally now, finally, finally, finally…
I don’t know when your final will come to a real final.
No, this is the end now. If the end comes, how do you want Nigerians to remember you, if you have the chance to write your epitaph?
I want Nigerians to be fair to me. Like this case of 53, 55 suitcases, like the case of N2.8billion. I want Nigerians to be fair and to be fair, all these documents are in the Nigerian archives. As I said, I didn’t do anything important outside the three organs of government: the Supreme Military Council, Council of States and Council of Ministers. On serious issues, Nigerians should do some research. That is why I always make emphasis on investigative journalism. If you want to be fair and impartial, I am sure you can have the capacity, both intellectual and resource to make an in-depth investigation.
Nigerians should be fair to you?
They should be fair to me.
Your daughter just passed on?
She would have been 40 before she died.
Oh, when life was just beginning.
Yes.
What was the circumstance? Some said she was a sickler; she had sickle cell anemia.
She was a sickler and she had complication when she was delivered by Caesarian.
And that remains a very sad incident for you.
Yes.
Thank you, General.
You are always welcome.

10 Dressing Mistakes Men Make That Makes Them Look A Mess

Being in style is not something you need to spend a fortune on, knowing how to go about it is what makes you stand out.

You can buy a cheap attire and wear it expensively based on your style but unfortunately, most men think they are stylish and so do not need advice from anyone but when a stylist walks into a room, everyone can tell he looks different from all the other men.

You might see yourself as being stylish but you could be making a lot of mistakes with the way you dress and it is pretty common among a lot of men.

Here are 10 dressing bloopers that make men look a mess.

1. Tucking up your shirt sleeves.

It is common these days to see men tuck up their long sleeves all the way up but what they probably do not know is that it makes them look childish and cheap. It also at some point, rolls down and looks messy.

You can still tuck your long sleeves but you need to do it properly and in style. Instead of folding it all the way up and making it look crumple and not even and unprofessional, you can tuck it up by unbuttoning your shirt, roll your sleeves up to your elbow and from the base of the rolled sleeves, roll it over again and keep it like that.

2. Muffin Tops.

Muffin top is when men dress and their tucked in shirts seem to have pulled out of their trousers, creating a muffin top at their waistline when in fact, the shirt should be tucked in properly.

This is pretty common these days and it is because we don’t tuck in our shirts properly. Muffin tops make you look unprofessional and sluggish. So men intentionally do this after tucking in thinking it is the best but truth is, it makes you look cheap and unkempt. Others just don’t know how to properly tuck in a shirt. If you really want to solve that problem, then you need to tuck in properly. You can try the military tuck in.

3. Wearing Sunglasses And A Hat Indoors Or At Night.

Doing this clearly defines who you are, that you’re not courteous or lack etiquette.

Usually, doing this defeats the purpose of the hats and sunglasses. Sunglasses and hats are usually worn to block sun rays or to provide shade and so wearing them in the night or indoors clearly makes us want to ask the question, “What do you need that for?”

4. Wearing Winter Jackets In The Hot Sun.

This is very common among Ghanaian rappers or hiplife artists. The fact that you want to emulate American rappers does not mean you should dress like them. The way you see them dress is because of their weather, you can’t be wearing same here in this hot sun. Truth is, in a weather like ours, you need to take off your jacket because man is definitely hot.

5. The Perception That Leather Shoes Are Only Meant For Suits And Ties.

A lot of men find it uncomfortable wearing leather shoes with jeans and a polo T-shirt because they feel it is inappropriate but the truth is, they are not.

Not wearing leather shoes over some jeans only limits your style. They can be worn with jeans or even with shorts if you want to. So for the records, leather shoes are not only for boardroom meetings.

6. Wearing Only Sneakers.

Alright, we get it, you want to look hippy and stylish all the time but wearing only sneakers all the time limits your style. There are a lot of other shoes out there you can wear to look dashing such as loafers, chukka boots, chelsea boots etc. that can diversify your look and make you look better.

7. Wearing Leather Shoes Without Socks.

Wearing shoes without socks not only makes them smell bad, it also gives you blisters and makes you feel uncomfortable and this affects your walking and posture. And oh! when you take off your shoes, even flies run for shelter. It is quite embarrassing to be well dressed but when you take off your shoes, it stinks bad. To save yourself the disgrace, always wear your socks.

8. Knowing When To Tuck In And When Not To Tuck In.

Shirts these days basically communicate with you and can tell you whether you should tuck in or not, but if you don’t know the features, you’re likely to tuck in shirts you’re not supposed to and rather not tuck in shirts you’re supposed to.

So how do you tell if you have to tuck in or not? If the shirt is long and passes the length of your wrist, then it is a sign you should tuck in. But if the shirt is shorter and above your wrist, then it means you don’t need to tuck it in. Simple as that.

9. Floppy Collar.

If you’re wearing a suit without a tie on your shirt, it is not good to let your collar lie flat, it is better to let it stand straight. To achieve this, make sure you button the collar buttons, the small buttons that keep your tie in place and let it stand stiff. This makes it look professional even without the tie.

10. Not Dressing For The Occasion.

Some men are just poor at dressing for the occasion, they feel that’s how they dress and so that defines who they are and so nobody can tell them what to wear. Truth is, nobody cares about what you wear, it is the occasion that determines what to wear. You can’t go to the beach in a suit and tie, the same way you can’t go to an interview in a soccer jersey. Learn to dress for the occasion, it speaks loads about you.

This week in the Trump-Russia investigation — Republicans slam Mueller, intelligence officials get defensive, and top Democrat says Russia will be back

It was a relatively slow week in Robert Mueller's Russia probe, but some key revelations helped move the investigation forward.

It was a relatively slow week in special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, but some key revelations helped move the investigation forward.

Here's everything you need to know about what has happened since Monday:

Anti-Mueller Republicans have been communicating with the White House: One of the Republicans who has been critical of Robert Mueller's investigation indicated that he has spoken to the White House about the issue, but maintains that the questions he asked about the two FBI agents who exchanged anti-President Donald Trump texts were motivated purely by the evidence. Two other Republicans have also spoken to Trump's administration about Mueller's investigation. The Justice Department still has not answered how it chose which of Peter Strzok’s text messages to release: Following the release of 375 text messages sent between FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, the Department of Justice has still not explained how it chose which texts to disseminate from the 10,000 it had obtained. Department of Justice officials and legal scholars criticized Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for his actions on the Strzok-Page affair.Intelligence officials spoke out about Trump allies railing against the FBI: Retired Gen. Michael Hayden, the former director of the CIA and the National Security Agency, was joined by several other high-level former intelligence officials this week in defending Mueller, his investigation, and the FBI from criticism by Trump and his political allies.Trump believes Mueller will exonerate him in a letter: Trump reportedly feels encouraged by the lack of any charges against him in the Mueller investigation, and is apparently telling friends and advisers that he believes he will receive a letter from Mueller exonerating him early next year. His lawyer Ty Cobb says he has "no idea" where Trump got this idea from.Despite recusing himself months ago, Nunes still holds sway in House Russia probe: Republican Rep. Devin Nunes still controls the House Intelligence Committee's subpoena power and he has used that power to subpoena only one financial institution: the primary bank for the DC-based opposition research firm Fusion GPS. Democrats see this as a partisan maneuver and encourage the House to subpoena banks with closer ties to Trump and his associates.Senate Judiciary Democrat says his committee has not done enough to prevent future Russian meddling: Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse said Congress is focusing on "peripheral issues" that will do little to prevent future Russian hacks in 2018 and beyond. In an earlier tweet, Whitehouse suggested that Sen. Chuck Grassley had taken orders from Trump to shift the focus of the Russia investigation to expose former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's connection to an anti-Trump dossier. The FBI warned Trump that Russia would try to infiltrate his campaign: During last year's campaign, the FBI warned both the Trump and Clinton presidential campaigns that Russia would likely try to spy on and infiltrate their teams and that they should report any suspicious overtures to the bureau. The revelation sheds new light on what Trump knew about Russian meddling and raises questions about why his campaign team did not report the many overtures it received from Russia-linked entities to the FBI as requested.

Mueller is currently spearheading the FBI's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election, including whether members of Trump's campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the election in his favor. He is also looking into whether Trump sought to obstruct justice when he fired FBI director James Comey in May.

The ketogenic diet might burn 10 times more fat than the standard American diet

Pretty impressive.

Ketogenic diet study  (Photograph by ThitareeSarmkasat/Getty Images)

Many people who follow the ketogenic diet (a.k.a. keto) are obsessed with its ability to help you lose weight quickly—and keep it off.

Now, new research has found that the low-carb diet may have one especially huge perk going for it: It might burn 10 times more fat than other diets.

That’s the major finding from research published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews. For the study, scientists took 30 adults who had been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, a group of health conditions that increase the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

They then randomly put them in three groups: One group ate a ketogenic diet but didn’t exercise, another ate a standard American diet and didn’t exercise, and a third that ate a standard American diet and exercised for 30 minutes a day for up to five days a week.

Here’s what they found: In 10 weeks, the group that was on the ketogenic diet had “significant” changes in their weight, body fat percentage, BMI, hemoglobin A1c (a test that measures a person’s blood sugar), and ketones (the result of your body burning fat for energy).

Their resting metabolic rate, which is the rate that your body body burns energy when you’re not doing anything, was more than 10 times that of people who ate a standard diet. “All variables for the ketogenic group out-performed those of the exercise and non-exercise groups,” the researchers wrote in the study.

In case you’re not familiar with it, the keto diet is a high-fat, low-carb diet that encourages followers to get a moderate amount of protein. Carbs are generally replaced with fats, and it’s thought that this shifts your body into a metabolic state known as ketosis.

The keto diet generally shuns sugar, processed foods, low-fat foods, grains and gluten, high-carb fruit, and vegetable oils. Instead, followers are encouraged to eat plenty of non-starchy vegetables, lean meats and fish, full-fat dairy, and nuts and seeds.

It’s worth pointing out that this study is small and it focused on people with a health condition—not otherwise healthy people. Still, the findings are definitely worth thinking about if you've been mulling over going keto.

SPORT: ESPN FC's updates from Real Madrid vs. Barcelona

Alejandro Moreno explains why Lionel Messi will be the X-factor in El Clasico after a difficult match against Deportivo.

ESPN FC is "OnScene" at the world's biggest club football game: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona, which kicks off on Dec. 23 at 12 p.m. GMT / 7 a.m. ET.

Barcelona go into this weekend's Clasico with a six-point lead at the top of the La Liga and an 11 point lead over Madrid, albeit having played a game more... But a Madrid win (after their success at the Club World Cup) would open up the title race again.

Here's all the latest buildup from the ESPN team and our correspondents Sam Marsden (Barcelona) and Dermot Corrigan (Real Madrid).

Ronaldo misses full training for third day

Cristiano Ronaldo was again unable to take part in full Real Madrid training on Thursday morning. The forward also missed Tuesday and Wednesday's training sessions with his teammates and, although Real Madrid have not issued any specific update on the calf problem or any other potential injury, he was again unable to even work with the football today.

"The team have trained at Real Madrid City in continued preparation for the La Liga showdown with Barcelona, to be played at the Santiago Bernabeu this Saturday (1:00pm CET)," a club statement released afterwards said. "Ball work took centre stage in a session which saw Zidane involve Under-19s goalkeeper Moha. Cristiano Ronaldo trained alone out on the pitch, both with and without the ball, whilst Luca [Zidane] continued his recovery process."

Barca's latest training update is less dramatic

Barcelona goes to the polls

Barcelona are preparing for the Clasico but it's a big day in the city for other reasons. After October's unilateral referendum on independence, Spain's central government called regional Catalan elections for today. Among those expected to vote is Gerard Pique, who has called for the final result - whether it's a pro-independence, pro-referendum or pro-unity party that wins -- to be respected. "It's a very important day in the history of Catalonia," he wrote on Twitter. "The future is in our hands. We have the power with our votes. I'll add one thing: the final result will be the will of the Catalan people. Respect it." Once the results are in, thoughts can turn to Saturday's trip to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Late changes to Barca travel plans

Barca look to Ronaldinho for inspiration

One of Barcelona's best Bernabeu memories came over a decade ago now, in the 2005-06 season. It came at the height of the Frank Rijkaard era and featured a stunning performance from Ronaldinho. So good was the Brazilian on the day in the 3-0 win, scoring two of the goals, that even the Madrid supporters applauded him. Ronaldinho's throne has now been taken by Lionel Messi and he's had plenty of good moments in the Spanish capital, too. Will he provide another one on Saturday?

Player-cams for Ronaldo and Messi

Providing he makes it, Cristiano Ronaldo will be tracked with a dedicated player camera on Saturday, along with great rival Lionel Messi. A La Liga statement read: "Two cameras will get up-close and personal with the Portuguese striker and the Argentine forward, allowing supporters to feast their eyes on every last move made by the global stars.

"The same applies to the two men in the dugouts, with a pair of cameras set to be trained on Zinedine Zidane and Ernesto Valverde right from the first whistle. In an effort to make television viewers feel as if they were lapping up the action from a seat in the stands, the Bernabeu is also to be equipped with a virtual Be The Player camera, which features Intel's 360° technology and represents a first for a La Liga broadcast. This camera captures events from the player's perspective, offering spectators the same view of the match as their heroes."

Ronaldo and Messi's personal rivalry

Marca's cover Thursday morning played up the Ronaldo vs. Messi rivalry with the headline: "Level on 53 goals - Cristiano and Messi have the same goals in 2017. Their goal-scoring influence in Madrid and Barca victories is almost identical."

Inside the story detailed how their teams both win 75 percent of games when their main man plays, while Madrid winning 89.5 percent of their games when Ronaldo scores, to Barca's 88.9 percent victories when Messi scores.

The next generation

Future Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior is in the Spanish capital this week to visit the club's facilities and take in Saturday's Clasico, although the teenager -- still playing at Brazilian club Flamengo -- apparently removed a photo from Instagram which showed him en route on Wednesday.

UN slaps new sanctions on North Korea

With China’s backing, the UN Security Council on Friday slapped new sanctions on North Korea that will restrict oil supplies vital for Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear programs.

The council unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution that also orders the repatriation of North Korean workers abroad and earning revenue for Kim Jong-Un’s regime.

It is the third raft of sanctions imposed on North Korea this year and comes as the United States and North Korea are showing no signs they are willing to engage in talks to end the crisis on the Korean peninsula.

The resolution bans the supply of nearly 75 percent of refined oil products to North Korea, puts a cap on crude deliveries and orders the repatriation of all North Korean nationals working abroad by the end of 2019.

The measures are in response to North Korea’s test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on November 28 that marked an advance in Pyongyang’s drive to threaten the US mainland with a nuclear strike.

President Donald Trump has threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea if it attacks the United States while North Korea insists the world must now accept that it is a nuclear power.

Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jinping last month to cut off oil to North Korea, a move that would cripple its desperately struggling economy.

Tens of thousands of North Koreans have been sent to Russia and China to earn revenue for Pyongyang, working in what UN rights officials have described as “slave-like conditions.”

Crude oil supplies were capped at four million barrels per year and a ceiling of 500,000 barrels of refined petroleum products, including diesel and kerosene, was set for next year.

That will reduce the flow of fuel from a previous ceiling set by the council of two million barrels a year.

To prevent North Korea from circumventing sanctions, all countries were authorized to seize, inspect, freeze and impound ships suspected of carrying illegal cargo to and from North Korea.

A total of 16 North Korean officials, most of whom work in banking, were added to the UN sanctions blacklist along with the North Korean ministry of the people’s armed forces, which manages logistics for the army.

They will be subjected to a global visa ban and assets freeze.

“This resolution bites,” French Ambassador Francois Delattre said, adding that it increases pressure on Pyongyang.

“Maximum firmness today is our best antidote to the risk of war,” he said.

More pressure
Since September last year, North Korea has carried out a nuclear test — its sixth — and a series of advanced missile launches which are banned under UN resolutions.

The United States has led the drive at the Security Council to tighten sanctions aimed at piling pressure on Kim’s regime to come to the negotiating table.

Ahead of the council meeting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said a unanimous vote would be important to send a clear message to Pyongyang that it must abandon its ambition to develop nuclear weapons.

Speaking in The Hague, Guterres said the “unity of the council is necessary to create an opportunity for diplomatic engagement for the de-nuclearization to be achieved through peaceful means.”

Last week, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told the council that the “pressure campaign must and will continue until denuclearization is achieved,” as he backtracked from his offer to hold unconditional talks with Pyongyang.

The council has also banned exports of North Korean coal, iron, lead, textiles and seafood, and restricted joint ventures.

The United States separately asked the council to blacklist 10 ships, including two Hong Kong-flagged vessels, for carrying banned cargo from North Korea.

China, however, raised objections at those sanctions and the request to ban the 10 ships from ports worldwide will again be considered on December 28.

Germany on Friday called for "dialogue and de-escalation" among "all Spanish actors" after snap elections in Catalonia saw separatists win a slim majority in parliament.

"We hope that it will be possible to overcome the present division in Catalan society and to shape a common future with all political powers in Spain," said government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer.

"The federal government trusts that all actors in Spain will pursue this goal and will use all means of dialogue and de-escalation," she said, adding that whatever Catalan government is formed, it will need to work "within the framework of the country's legal and constitutional order."

Demmer also stressed that Germany sees the case as an "inner-Spanish matter".

Catalan separatists won a crucial snap poll Thursday, plunging their region into further uncertainty after a failed independence bid shook Europe and triggered Spain's worst political crisis in decades.

With turnout at a record high of 82 percent, Thursday's election handed a mandate back to the region's ousted separatist leaders after they campaigned from exile and behind bars.

Madrid called Thursday's vote after secessionists declared independence on October 27, a hugely divisive issue for the wealthy northern region, that has rattled a Europe already shaken by Brexit.
